This unit was officially opened on 11 May 2000 and is based in the Department of Human Biology. The formation of the unit was inspired by the work of 1979 Nobel laureate the late Allan Cormack, who won the Nobel Prize for Medicine for his work on the computed tomography (CT) scanner. The mission of the unit is to conduct world-class research in medical imaging that specifically addresses the healthcare needs of Africa. The unit has an interdisciplinary focus, attracting talented physicists, engineers, computer scientists and clinicians.  Focus Research focuses on the role of medical imaging in addressing health problems that are relevant to Africa. These include trauma, cancer, tuberculosis, cardiac disease, brain disorders, acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), neuromuscular disorders and alcohol abuse. Core Research Areas:
Electroencephalography & brain-computer interfaces
Electromyography & bio-mechatronics Low-dose digital X-ray imaging for primary healthcare

Duties
Projects are assigned to interns according to the students field of expertise, their interests and the skills they possess. Interns will be allocated to one of the core research areas as mentioned above.

Requirements
Studying towards a degree/diploma in Biomedical Engineering or a related area
Some past experience would be preferable
Good analytical skills
Able to work both well in a team and independently
