Luyanda M. was the founder member of MMA Architects Cape Town Studio, an architectural company identified with innovative and home-grown design solutions. This softly spoken man’s overt gentleness belies a strength of character that has resulted in a career loaded with accolades. After a 12  year partnership at MMA, Luyanda launched  this firm In the late 70’s, Luyanda studied architecture at the University of Natal and Natal Technikon before being  imprisoned for 5 years for anti-apartheid political activities in 1981. After his release from Robben Island in 1986, he went into exile to Germany and completed his M.Sc/Dipl.-Ing. in architecture at the Technical University of Berlin. Luyanda was the co-initiator of the South African Embassy project in Berlin, the first time that a major architectural commission was given to a Black company by the new South African government. This building was awarded the Award of Excellence by the South African Institute of Architects in 2003. Luyanda also served as a technical adviser for the construction of all 10 stadiums for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and in 2009 he received a Curry Stone Design Award from the University of Kentucky USA

Work description

Paul S. is a registered professional architect and sole practitioner in Cape Town. He also lectures Studiowork and Theory of Design at the Department of Architectural Technology, Cape Peninsula
University of Technology (CPUT) and has established their Design-Build Studio. Paul has experience in the design of commercial and institutional buildings, as well as campus pedestrianisation (University of the Free State) and urban revitalisation projects (Salt River Market Urban Redevelopment Framework). Working as sole practitioner since 2005, he has gained residential design and project management experience. Paul has also taught in the field of architecture since 2004, at the Universities of the Free State and Cape Town, and Cape Peninsula University of Technology. His specialties are restoration and redevelopment of houses in heritage areas in Cape Town as well as Urban and rural development research within the African context. Paul’s past positions include Architect at Georg Perfect Architects, Architect at KTT Architects, Architect at Bannie Britz Argitek en Stedelike Ontwerper. Architecture students will be based in the Design-Build Office which is in the Department of Architectural Technology at CPUT, working with Paul and others.

Work description
Architecture interns will receive world class exposure in their field and will assist with all aspects relating to the running of the design-build studio: design work, client liaison, working drawings, site visits, compiling of material for research and fundraising purposes, costings, and even on site building work together with CPUT’s Architecture students. Where possible each intern will be involved in student work which is relevant to the projects that they are working on. As the design-build studio is part of the department of architecture, many of the projects they have an academic component where they involve their own students. Interns will also assist with project planning for the next year, so will receive exposure to a range of proposed projects. As the studio also tries to have an intern from their own school assisting them, international interns will be able to draw on their experience in the office as well.

Both  have extensive experience with Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) processes. SDKS-Architects are Heritage conscious and endeavor where possible to do justice to historical buildings, artifacts and environments whilst being mindful of contemporary requirements. Internship Description
Architecture interns will receive world class exposure in their field under the training of Architects Paul and Katrin. An internship with thos office is particularly well suited to a design and heritage internship; design at all levels of heritage intervention, from conception to detail, as well as heritage research work. You would have the opportunity to be involved in the following projects amongst others: 
-With a longstanding heritage project with a community organization in Paarl, for whom they are imminently beginning design work for a third ‘Lotto” application – their two previous lotto applications have been successful, and have resulted in the  Community Project
-During the period from June 1st till year end, the office will be completing construction on an interesting contemporary expansion to a gorgeous 1890 - 1920’s ‘Cape Arts and Crafts” building. (House “Elwyngor”)
-They will be working on the publication of at least one, or possibly two academic papers covering the architectural development of small houses for poorer people in Cape Town during the period 1800 – 1914. This is an area of research that has previously been little explored. They have already assembled a large data base, which needs to be refined and extracted from for publication and an intern could also assist with this.

Most of their work is in the South Peninsula as their studio is located within the Scarborough Conservation Village, bordering the Cape Point Nature Reserve, an ideal base for exploration of their Design Principles this office prides itself in creating site-responsive architecture, growing from & informed by particularities of climate, context and terrain. responsible utilization of resources & materials create buildings in a manner mindful of site disturbance, energy usage & cost.They strive for environmentally conscious design principles & construction and commitment to meeting clients’ brief, whilst maintaining integrity towards design concept.
