Are you looking for an exciting way to learn about a new culture, meet new people, and make a positive impact on a community in need? Would you like to volunteer in a children’s home or with a street kids’ project? Without volunteers many children in South Africa would not
experience all the love, friendship, guidance, patience, empathy and so many of life’s other essential lessons that staff are sometimes too busy to offer. Many children are HIV positive and their life expectancy may not be very long, but they will experience life just the same as we do, and because of the attention and care they receive from their caregivers and the volunteers, their lives are enriched and made more than just bearable.
A voluntary period in South Africa can further your career goals or be based on developing your personal horizons. You can choose from wildlife conservation, education, social work, health care, conservation, environmental affairs, cultural affairs and many other areas.
Volunteers can work in South Africa on many different projects in Non Government Organizations (NGOs), and Non Profit organizations (NPOs). A person does not need any specific qualifications or expertise to apply for voluntary work. However, specific characteristics that will equip you as a suitable applicant are:
- If working with children, a love for children, regardless of race, health, gender or handicaps
- An ability to put others needs first
- Honesty at all times
- Staying power and commitment
- Ability to be part of a team
- Minimum of 18 years of age
- In good health and covered by accident and health insurance
- Prepared to pay for transportation to and from the host country, visa processing fees, and all personal expenses while abroad
