Cape Town is a metropolis with all the advantages and disadvantages associated with crime and propensity to violence. However, if you adhere to a few simple rules Cape Town is as safe as any other big city in the world. “The DON´TS

  • Beggars: Children / young people in particular are often members of groups and organized gangs and should not be underestimated. So, don´t chat with them and avoid contact.
  • Take care: When you exchange money with your EC or credit card.
    - Only draw money when the banks are open
    - Don´t use cash machines on the street, rather draw money in shopping centers
    - Make sure that nobody is watching you while you withdraw money
    - Don´t allow any interruptions or assistance while you are using the cash machines
  • Don’t wear flashy jewelry or watches
  • Don´t wear your camera in an obvious way
  • Don´t show your money in public
  • Don´t get involved in arguments or conflict situations
  • It is not safe to walk longer distances at night
  • Isolated areas and small streets should be avoided
  • Don´t leave visible objects in your car
  • Try to park in busy well lit places
  • Never pick up strangers and do not drive into a township alone
