Security in Cape Town

General Information

Cape Town is a big city with both pros and cons. One disadvantage is the high crime rate! Avoiding crime, on the other hand, is easy if you are prepared to follow some simple rules. Cape Town is as safe as any other big city if you just keep in mind the following DO NOTs!

The DO NOTs

  • Street kids and teenagers are often part of organised gangs and should not be underestimated. DO NOT talk to them.
  • Be careful and aware when you want to draw money with an EC or credit card as there are gangs that operate in stealing bank cards. If possible DO NOT draw money after the banks have closed. Try not to draw money from the ATMs on the street (rather go into a bank or a mall). Make sure that you are not observed or distracted while drawing money.
  • DO NOT wear expensive jewellery or display your cameras openly. Avoid flashing big amounts of money around in public.
  • DO NOT enter into discussions or arguments with people on the street. Sometimes drugs or alcohol are involved, which may increase the problem.
  • DO NOT walk alone or for long distances at night. Rather call a taxi from a reputable company.
  • DO NOT visit deserted areas and streets on your own. Rather go in large groups.
  • DO NOT leave anything visible in the car. Park your vehicle in well lit and secured areas, remove your radio face and leave your belongings in the boot of the car.
  • DO NOT pick up hitch hikers, and do not explore Townships on your own!
